Internal Family Systems Therapy

IFS THERAPY in Charlotte NC

What is Internal Family Systems?

Hi, my name is Carrie, and I’m an IFS trained therapist in Charlotte, NC.

Using Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, whether you’re struggling with anxiety, trauma, relationship challenges, or simply seeking personal growth, I can help guide you on your journey towards healing and self-discovery.

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate and transformative approach that views the mind as a complex system of parts, and each part may have its own thoughts, feelings, and roles.  These parts are often formed in response to life experiences and influence how we think, feel, and behave.

Sometimes, these parts can become overwhelmed or burdened by life experiences, leading to inner conflict, emotional pain, and difficulty in relationships.

If you’ve ever been conflicted on something, it’s likely two different parts of you! One part wants one thing, and the other part wants something else entirely. This is normal!

Through IFS therapy, we’ll work together to identify and help parts heal or let go of burdens; fostering greater self-awareness, inner harmony, and personal freedom. The goal is to help you connect with your “Self” – the calm, compassionate core of your being – to live a balanced life.

The Benefits of IFS Therapy
  • Increased Self-Awareness: Gain a deeper understanding of your internal world and the different parts that influence your behaviors and emotions.

  • Emotional Healing: Heal from past traumas and emotional wounds, leading to a more balanced and harmonious inner life.

  • Improved Relationships: Enhance your relationships by understanding your own internal dynamics and fostering better communication and empathy.

  • Personal Growth: Develop a stronger sense of self, build resilience, and move forward in life with greater confidence and clarity.

IFS therapy is a powerful tool for anyone looking to deepen their self-awareness, heal from past trauma, and live a more authentic, fulfilling life. If you’re ready to start your journey with IFS, I’m here to guide and support you every step of the way.

how ifs therapy can help you heal

As an experienced IFS therapist, I offer a safe, non-judgmental space where you can explore your inner world with curiosity and compassion. Together, we will:

  • Identify and Understand Your Parts: Learn about the different parts of yourself that influence your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors.
  • Heal Wounded Parts: Address past traumas and unburden parts carrying pain, shame, or fear.
  • Foster Self-Leadership: Cultivate your inner “Self” to lead your parts with clarity, confidence, and compassion.
  • Build Resilience: Develop healthy coping strategies and emotional resilience to navigate life’s challenges.
  • Enhance Relationships: Improve communication, intimacy, and understanding in your relationships with others.
  • Identifying Parts: Through guided conversation and mindfulness, we identify the different parts within you and understand their roles, feelings, and needs.
  • Building a Relationship with Parts: Instead of battling against these parts or trying to eliminate them, we work on forming a compassionate relationship with each part, understanding their intentions, and why they act in certain ways.
  • Healing the Exiles: By gently bringing attention to the wounded exiles, we work to heal their pain and release the burdens they carry. This process allows for greater emotional freedom and resilience.
  • Creating Internal Harmony: As parts are understood, healed, and integrated, the internal system becomes more harmonious, allowing your Self to lead with confidence, clarity, and compassion.

What to expect in your first IFS session:

Your first session with an Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapist is a time to explore what brings you to therapy and begin understanding your inner world in a new way. Unlike traditional talk therapy, IFS is an experiential therapy, meaning it’s not just about discussing your struggles—it’s about actively connecting with the different parts of yourself that hold emotions, beliefs, and past experiences.

Here’s what you can expect:

Getting to Know You – Your therapist will ask about what’s bringing you to therapy, your goals, and any past experiences with therapy. There’s no pressure to have all the answers as this is a space for curiosity and exploration.

Introduction to IFS – If you’re new to IFS, your therapist may explain how the model works, including the idea that we all have different “parts” within us, such as the inner critic, the perfectionist, or the people-pleaser. These parts often develop as a way to protect us from pain but can also keep us stuck.

A Gentle Exploration of Your Inner World – IFS is experiential, which means you’ll be invited to notice what’s happening inside, whether it’s emotions, thoughts, or physical sensations. Your therapist may guide you to focus on a specific feeling or struggle and explore what part of you is holding it. This isn’t about analyzing or overthinking, it’s about experiencing what comes up with curiosity and self-compassion.

Building a Relationship with Your Parts – Rather than trying to “get rid” of difficult feelings, IFS helps you build a new relationship with them. You might start to notice a part of you that feels anxious, critical, or overwhelmed, and your therapist will help you understand its role and purpose. The goal is to approach these parts from a place of Self: the calm, compassionate core of who you are.

A Collaborative Process – Your therapist will check in with you throughout the session to ensure you feel safe and supported. If emotions feel intense, you’ll be guided in grounding techniques to help you stay present.

By the end of the first session, you may walk away with a greater sense of clarity about your inner world and a feeling of self-connection that you might not have experienced before. Over time, IFS helps you heal wounds at their root, shift limiting patterns, and step into a more balanced, empowered version of yourself.

 IFS informed EMDR

How IFS and EMDR Integrate for Healing Breakthroughs

Internal Family Systems (IFS) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) are two supportive approaches that work well together to help you heal from self-doubt, anxiety, relationship challenges, and past painful experiences. IFS allows you to get to know different aspects of yourself—like the parts that may carry worry, fear, or protectiveness—so you can understand why they’re there and what they need to feel better. EMDR then helps you gently process specific memories or emotions connected to those parts, reducing their hold on you and making space for new, positive beliefs. Together, these approaches guide you in releasing old hurts, building self-compassion, and feeling more whole and at peace in your life.

The more we can be curious and open minded towards oursleves, the more we can learn and grow.

IFS Informed EMDR Therapy Intensives

EMDR is often done in weekly 50-80 minute sessions, however if you are looking for more immediate relief from your symptoms an IFS- informed EMDR Intensive can be a great option to get immediate results.

An EMDR intensive consists of an initial one hour intake session where we will create your treatment plan before scheduling a half day (3 hours) or full day (6 hours) intensive. Some intensives may be over multiple days. This will all vary depending on the type of the trauma as well as your treatment goals.
